Well, it came the time to change the oil to the V-Strom and after a couple of issues I managed to do it successfully.

I will not show you every step to change the oil as the web is full of videos explaining it in a very good detail.

I want to give you some usefull information about what could take a bad direction.

As I already stated in the previous post the procedure is quite easy but there are things that can goes wrong at any time.

Let’s start

First of all we need something to collect the used oil, I can suggest this eco tank with a capacity of 6 liters fits perfectly under the bike without the need to use any kind of lifters. This kind of tank it’s very easy to fill and easy to empty into the final tank.

You’ll need a new filter, because any remaining of the used oil lasting into it will quickly ruin the new oil. I can suggest HiFloFiltro HF138RC that can easily mounted thanks to the head equipped with a bolt.

Who’s used to oil change knows that’s not so difficult but you could encounter some difficulties l’m gonna highlight in this post.

First issue – engine protection bar and carter protection

My V-Strom 250 is equipped with GIVI engine protection tubular bars which somehow makes more difficult to access the filter and especially to operate with the strap wrench or any other wrench (in case your bike already uses a filter with bolt on the head).

My GIVI protections was not so easy to remove but was just a matter of patience and I was able to do my job without fully removing them.

The carter protection instead will have to be removed entirely.

Second issue – the washer of the oil drain plug

The Suzuki V-Strom 250 is equipped with an aluminium washer that does it job properly. You’ll have to pay attention while removing it because the oil flowing could cause the washer to drop inside the tank.

I prefer to use copper washers instead of aluminium washers, I’ve a set of this but you can use whatever you want or keep the original one provided by Suzuki.

WARNING: Do not exceed while tightening the cap to avoid ruining the thread. The tightening torque for the oil drain plug of is 23 Nm (refer to the service manual for details).

Third issue – tightening the filter

That’s a common issue when working with oil filters: keep in mind the tightening torque to apply that for DL-250 is 20Nm (refer to the service manual for details).
